Hungry Planet

The Hungry Planet by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio
I checked this book out at the library this week and I have had a hard time putting it down. It is a book about 30 families all around the world and what they eat in a week. It is amazing how different we all are. The other thing that has struck me is how some have so much and some have so little.

I think about my own kitchen and feel guilty over the waste that sometimes happens. Especially when I think about how some people on the planet have to struggle for every drop of water and every morsel of food.

I wonder how much reading this book will change the way I look at the food we have and if it will help me and my family take care of the resources we are so fortunate to have.

I am asking myself how I can make a difference...

I encourage you to try to find this book at your library. It is a lovely book and my children have poured over the pictures.

This is a great book. I used some of the pictures in my classroom when we talked about differences in culture and my high school students really got how much we consume compared to other countries...and how differently we eat. I think he wrote another one called Material World? It is the same concept but with possessions instead of food.

I subscribe Readers Digest Indonesia and at this month edition there's also an article about 'Meal Expenses Around the World' in many families from Europe to Sudan. I just said "Wow" to read in French : a family with 3kids usually spend $419,95 for a week and in Sudan only $1,23 !
I think your book is very good to open our eyes, minds and heart about our meals and lifestyle.
Here in some part of Indonesia at the rural region, people also spend very few money for their daily life. Education is far beyond their list to do. My hubby and I (try)starting to help 4 kids to continue their study by paying their school's tuition. We knew 3 of them at our vacation in Makassar a month ago and the other is living in the same city with us. We don't exactly know what's the best for them, but we belive only by good education they could change their life. I remember one of wise word from one of a movie (I forgot the title) "You don't have to change the whole world, just do one little kindness in everytime" . I like that sentence..

Have a nice weekend :)
